How did you get interested in photography?
I grew up shooting photos with my mom and aunt; I was always trying to capture what I saw around me. When I started taking classes at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, it felt like home—the faculty were so passionate about their work and their students were so talented. I fell in love with photography from the start. It’s such a powerful medium to tell stories and express yourself through images.
What was your first professional assignment?
My very first assignment was for Vogue magazine—I shot a cover story on an up-and-coming designer called Rodarte. It was an amazing experience to see my images published in one of the industry’s leading publications, and it really kickstarted my career.
What are some common challenges you face when shooting fashion photographs?
One of the main challenges when shooting fashion photos is capturing movement accurately; you have to be able to freeze time while still keeping your subjects looking natural and beautiful. With portraits, it can be difficult trying to figure

Valerie Velardi has always been a camera-happy person. Growing up, she would often take pictures of her family and friends, capturing the unique moments in their lives. Now, as an adult, she continues to capture life’s little moments with her camera, documenting her family’s everyday life. Valerie and her husband have two young children and enjoy spending time together cooking meals in their kitchen or out taking walks around the neighborhood. Valerie enjoys photographing everything from family gatherings to spontaneous photo opportunities that pop up during their day-to-day lives. What started out as a way to capture happy memories for herself has now become a passion for documenting all of her loved ones’ lives.

Valerie Velardi’s Death
Valerie Velardi was a prolific and celebrated photographer who died in November of last year at the age of 98. Her great-nephew, Benoit Sagot, has compiled a retrospective of her work for the Parisian publication L’Express. The exhibition runs from February 4 through May 28th at the Galerie du Jeu de Paume.
Valerie Velardi was born in 1922 to a well-to-do family in Milan, Italy. At 18 she enrolled in an art school and began taking photographs as a hobby. She moved to France in 1949 and quickly became one of Europe’s preeminent photojournalists. In 1956 she won the prestigious World Press Photo Award for her coverage of the Suez Crisis.
Valerie Velardi is perhaps best known for her candid images of celebrities and politicians, but she also photographed war zones and poverty-stricken communities around the world. “What attracted me to photography,” Velardi once said, “was that it allowed me to experience things firsthand without any interference from my own ego.”
